To Howl And To Hug

I’m really excited to present a furry morsel of my music from yesterday’s Adventure Time premiere, “Hug Wolf”. This particular piece accompanies the climactic showdown between *WOOP WOOP SPOILER* beta-hug-wolf Finn and his alpha rival.

I had a bunch of neat ideas to implement Finn’s fuzzy transformation in sound: burying 8bit NES synths in distortion, playing guitar with my girlfriend’s many fur coats, screaming into pillows… You probably already guessed which of these I went with. While it was no easy task to pluck guitar strings through a layer of fur, I did get the perfect sound: warm, woolly discomfort. For a fully charged grand finale hug-fest, I built a ruff, splintered beat that sounds like unrelenting static electricity. ZING!

NEPTR Rap. WWWTCD?

Adventure Time composer Tim Kiefer has this belated Easter gift for us: the instrumental bed of NEPTR’s rap from “Hot to the Touch.” Tim says:

Pen wanted to stay true to the feel of Rebecca’s demo, so I asked myself: what would Wu-Tang Clan do? Well, chances are they’d power on the MPC, pull out a crate of records and go to town flipping old samples into dope beats. Fortunately, I had the Adventure Time equivalent to sample-ready dusty vinyl: my near-ancient NEPTR music from season 1! Cut ‘n’ pasting, pitching and reversing transformed this old material into the clattery bumpin’ beat presented here. Enjoy!

Chip Dip Triple Flips Are Hip

Good ol’ Tim Kiefer, the more northern half of Adventure Time’s composers, is being kind enough to share with us his “Chip Dip Triple Flips Are Hip,” better known to us as the rooftop party song in “Power Animal.” Tim writes:

“Power Animal” was such a great episode to make music for - from the Terminator-esque rumblings of the Beneathiverse to Finn’s delusions of grandeur fanfare to Jake’s ravey Party God encounter. Finn & Jake’s roof party song was my first chance on the show to get down and dirty with some “party music”, so I started by referencing Casey James’ wonderfully blippy and carefree Candy Party song from “The Enchiridion,” and crafted a light, fluttery melody. A flurry of drum programming and 8-bit arpeggiating later, I ended up with this bright bundle of energy that made the scene feel like you were chewing on flourescent rainbow shoelaces. Many people ask about this track and I’m happy to pass it along, enjoy!

Best Manlorette Party Song Ever

So Tim Kiefer, who, along with Casey Basichis, handles the scoring duties on Adventure Time, was kind enough to make available for download his “Manlorette Party” song, the one in “When Wedding Bells Thaw.” Here’s what Tim has to say about the piece:

Thanks to everyone for showing my Manlorette Party song so much love. It shouldn’t be a surprise that I’m a huge geek for old skool video games, and that often finds its way into my Adventure Time music. But you’re probably less familiar with my other inspiration for this track: Chicago juke music. Ever since I started working on AT, juke has been an influence on my tunes in a big way… Dancing Bug anyone?
